Abstract:
»Rape culture in popular music spans from song lyrics to working conditions and has been researched since the 1980s. Analyses of “jailbait” music from the 1950s to the 1980s were followed by several musicological rape culture studies after 2010 that include reflections on postfeminism and alternative music, misogyny, and media. Recent studies evaluate the particular situation of female employees at music festivals, and an overall normalization of sexualised violence in rock music. The specification of rape music analysis will be expanded in this paper to exploring anti-rape music. Specifically, I consolidate hints on musical outputs that have questioned but also confrontatively fought widespread rapepositive narratives since the 1990s. Several songs, music videos and youth cultural initiatives in pop, metal, punk and rap music can be observed as anti-rape outputs since then. The paper will give an overview on the range and development of anti-rape musical outputs and actors. It explores youth cultures in the context of rape-and-revenge cultural artifacts and media. I approach these outputs with an interest in the (recently returned) militant feminist aesthetics in popular music. Consequently, I outline and discuss the theoretical concepts of (preventive) revenge, militancy and defense in the context of rape culture and popular music. A central question remains: What are the cultural and societal factors that make these musical artifacts (still) necessary?«
